2010, a year filled with indelible memories like the BP Oil spill, the iPad, Brett Favre’s dick, and for music fans across the globe, the undeniable young prodigy MUNCHI. To the surprise of the entire music community, the 21 year old wunderkind from Rotterdam came out of nowhere, lacing tracks made in minutes on headphones and almost amateur software (Acid Pro). Munchi’s Moombahton EP may have placed him in the collective conscious of musicians, but it was his remix of Datsik’s “Firepower” that announced his arrival to a flood of new fans. Since then, he has released his first EP on T&A records called, “Murda Sound,” which showcases a versatile spectrum of songs and a striking blend of styles. The EP opens with the pulsating beat of “Shottas,” serenaded by Mr. Lexx (of Major Lazer fame) appropriately announcing, “Dem not ready for this.” The track skillfully segues into a slow and sexy dancehall break before building back into a faster electro like beat. Damaging speakers without skipping a beat, “Madre, No Llores” hits you with a very introspective dubstep reflection. Munchi’s subtle use of looped vocals breathe life into a song that is aimed at mature ears. From here the tempo picks up substantially via, “Toma Essa Porra,” showcasing some Baltimore club roots before slipping into  Baile funk before a big Dutch build up. Hands down the hardest-hitting track on the EP goes to the title track. With sirens, chopped vocals, dubstep bass, and a huge club beat, “Murda Sound” is a Freddy Kruger nightmare chase through West Baltimore.

Perhaps not aimed directly as the dance floor, but especially as a Moombahton fan, the closing track, “Hope,” strongly resonates with me (and is a Tittsworth favorite).  “Hope,” is meant to be experienced on more of a personal, emotive and more timeless level. If you enjoy a glass of wine, pop a cork. If you smoke weed, roll that blunt. This song is your soundtrack. The beautiful melodies build wonderfully into a chorus that is undeniably the feel-good moment of the 5 track EP. Whatever your poison is, Munchi delivers on this release. There is no one genre that defines him, and anyone that listens to this EP can agree Munchi’s sound is uniquely his own. His future is bright, and if it is anything like this debut release, that Munchi whistle will be a defining sound of this generation.

Ed. note: We are fortunate enough to be able to give away a very special version of the title track, “Murda Sound,” featuring the one and only M.I.A.
